On May 26, 2023, Prof. Xu Kaihua, Board Chairman of GEM held a breakfast meeting with Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Coordinator for Indonesia's Cooperation with China and Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs, and Prof. Guo Xueyi, Vice President of Central South University (CSU). The three sides exchanged sentiments of friendship and discussed cooperation amid a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.

Chairman Xu Kaihua extended warm welcome to Minister Luhut and his delegation, and introduced the development of GEM's Indonesia QMB Project. With the concern and support of Minister Luhut and the Indonesian government, Phase 1 of the QMB nickel resources project (30,000 tons of metallic nickel per year), which was put into operation on September 26, 2022, has exceeded its designed capacity by 15%, he said. As Indonesia's first HPAL line independently designed, installed and operated by QMB, it marks a great success of Indonesia's engineering technology. Phase 2 (43,000 tons of metallic nickel per year) is under way and scheduled to be put into operation in the first half of 2024.

Prof. Guo Xueyi introduced talent training and research development in CSU to Minister Luhut, especially its strength in training global talents in the fields of mining and metallurgical engineering, and new energy. The Indonesia-GEM-CSU International Master Program of Metallurgical Engineering is very successful international talent exchange cooperation, and CSU will continue to promote the program with its top-notch faculty, to create a highlight of China-Indonesia cooperation in talent training, he said.

GEM has built a world leading metallurgical engineering technology test and research center in Indonesia, and is implementing a training program for 1,000 engineers and senior technicians in metallurgical engineering in Indonesia. The 21 students on the First Indonesia-GEM-CSU International Master Program of Metallurgical Engineering have successfully completed their studies. In the presence of Prof. Li Jiancheng, President of CSU, 31 Indonesian students started their studies for the second session of this program on February 25, 2023. And enrollment for the third session is around the corner. In the future, the three sides will explore the construction of a technical college in Indonesia to train engineering talents for Indonesia, and conduct joint research to tackle technical problems arising in the industrial development of Indonesia.

Minister Luhut expressed gratitude to Chairman Xu Kaihua for coordinating his visit to Shenzhen and to CUS for training talents for Indonesia. He spoke highly of GEM's development in Indonesia, saying he experienced the tremendous development of QMB Project, especially the development of QMB (Indonesia) Laterite Nickel Ore Hydrometallurgy and New Energy Materials Engineering Technology Research Center, during leading an African delegation in visiting the project site on May 12, and the center has become a world top hydrometallurgy research center. Chairman Xu Kaihua's contributions to Indonesia will be remembered by the Indonesian people, he said. He also exchanged ideas with Prof. Xu Kaihua and Prof. Guo Xueyi on the technical problem of tailing disposal of Indonesian mines, and warmly welcomed GEM and CSU to organize experts to visit Indonesia and carry out academic exchanges.
